Coincidence…or Something Else?

Occasionally in life certain series of events occur that could be sheer coincidence or could be affirmation that something more powerful than us causes things to happen.

I have had two such occurrences in recent years.

Exhibit A:

One of my step-sons who had four children was killed in a car accident in 2008. His wife, the mother of the children, was killed in an accident in 2013.  At that time the sons were 13, 17, 21 and 25. The oldest of the boys took in his two youngest brothers. The second son was in college.

The oldest son a few years earlier had decide to take some time off  “to find himself”.  He left his job as a welder and headed up the west coast, travelling and working when he needed to fund himself,  then moving on when the spirit moved him.  He was a wanderer, but at the end of 2012 he decided to return to his previous locale, was hired back at his previous job, and picked up the relationship with his previous girlfriend. They were in the process of moving into their own place when he got the phone call that his mother had been killed in the car accident.

For him it was an automatic decision that his two youngest brothers would live with him.  We have discussed many times what was it that made him come home precisely when he did?  Why was it at that exact time he had determined that he had found himself and was ready to settle down?  If he had not come back, his brothers no doubt would have been taken care of by other family members, but this was clearly an instance of things having worked out as they were meant to, and the brothers are together.

Exhibit B:

I had two college roommates in the early ’70’s with whom I was extremely close. We each got our degrees and moved off to follow our own careers and lives.  By the end of the 1970’s I had lost touch with them completely.  As I got older, I tried to re-establish connections without success.

Fast forward to January 2014.  My brother-in-law in Wisconsin passed away.  I was making a quick trip to Wisconsin, flying into Madison, to attend his funeral.  My flight from Albuquerque directed me through Dallas.

While sitting at our gate in Dallas,  I saw someone who looked like my college roommate Judy (with 30 years added on).  I was not certain it was her. However, when our flight was called and she stood up and started walking I knew it was her.  Since she was already boarding I decided that I would try to connect with her when we got to Madison. However when I found my seat I was amazed that I was seated right next to her. We quickly established who we were, and then had to explain to other passengers what prompted the excited screaming and hugging. Our other roommate was meeting her at the airport in Madison so I reunited with her as well. Both of them had been trying to find me over the last couple of years.

The series of events that brought us together was quite remarkable.  We both lost family members at the same time. Judy lives in Seattle and I live in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I frequently fly through Dallas, but in many previous trips to Wisconsin from Seattle over a 30 year period of time, Judy had never before been routed through Dallas.  She needed to go to Milwaukee for the funeral and ordinarily she would have flown into Milwaukee, but she had decided to use frequent flyer miles from Alaskan Airlines which caused her itinerary to take her through Dallas and into Madison which is also where I was going. In addition, her son and her sister were flying from Seattle to Milwaukee for the funeral, and logistics would have made it much easier for her to take the same flights that they had, but she chose to use her frequent flyer miles instead.  Not only were we on the same flight but we were seated right next to each other.

Conclusion:

Non-believers are likely to say that these are just sheer coincidences.  I, however, do not believe in coincidences.

Have you had experiences where things fell together in exactly the right way?  Was it mere coincidence?

Affirmations of my faith, another thread of my life.

That kind of synchronicity happens to me all the time. A friend of mine says a coincidence is a miracle in which God chooses to remain anonymous.

I love your friend’s quote. I will need to remember that…and the word “synchronicity” is a perfect term for this. I could not think of a word to describe what I was talking about.

The world has become a lot smaller with transportation being more accessible. I am personally a firm believer of this. Making every place in the world more accessible means you eventually will catch up to someone you know in the most innocuous places LOL. Good for you!

Yes, I have run into people from my same town in airports half way across the country. But this was the only time I connected with a long lost friend.

Well that then is serendipity!! Good for you. Lol. I am still waiting to make my first hole in one and supposedly that is a 1:22500 chance.

Happens all the time to me. I sent an email to a random person last year(name found from the university website) asking for a job. No reply. Fast forward to 4 months later, an apologetic letter from the dean of the university saying they might have an opening. Now I am employed there. For about 3 years, I had been applying to various vacancies at this place, never once selected. But the one time I sent an email to that particular person, I got a reply.
What made me select that person from all the emails available on the website?
Why did he pick up my email and only mine to reply to ?
Why did I get the job, when there was no advertised opening for a job in that place ?
    Coincidences- I don’t think so.
People are put in the correct places to direct me on my life path. What better way to see God’s loving provision in our lives ?

I definitely see it as God’s faithfulness and his love. Thanks for commenting. So glad to know that worked out for you.

Just today I read a post on Facebook from our local Humane Society. A cat was turned in to the SPCA by a person who had previously adopted her from the local animal control. The cat was lovely and sweet, and the volunteers absolutely could not understand why no one adopted her. After about 90 days the SPCA decided to feature her in their “forget me not” Sunday column in the paper. A woman saw the posting and knew it was her cat who had been lost a couple of years ago. So many little things had to happen for her to be reunited with her beloved pet.

God works in mysterious ways, and sometimes we just have to trust that we are placed somewhere for a reason.

As these things happen to me and I hear about them more and more from others, my faith and trust grows. Wonderful story.

I don’t believe in coincidences…only opportunities for growth in self and in faith.

Wow! God is good. I don’t believe in coincidences or luck either. I believe God ordains our footsteps just as it states in the scriptures. I have had amazing testimonies similar to these. I call them “my FOG moments”. Favor of God. I had a special license tag made for my Jeep – FOG.
    Love your post!

I read your post and I absolutely think your story falls in with the same theme. Except that I do not term it “fate”. I love several of the comments made above…such as “Favor of God”, “a miracle in which God chooses to remain anonymous”, “God’s loving provisions in our life.” etc. Of course that is because I come from a pre-disposition of faith. Thanks for posting. It is a wonderful story. My daughter was also a premie and atlhough she had a tough start we were very fortunate to end up with a healthy child.

I need to share this because I don’t know whats happening. My so called coincidence’s started occurring about 5 years ago, at first they were sporadic but over a few months they were happening weekly. Although the events were bizarre occurrences I just wrote what was happening as mere coincidence.

        This week coincidence’s

        1. Driving my kids to school my daughter asked “why do moths fly toward lights at night”, I replied “Im not sure maybe the same reason whales beach themselves”. That night on the news there was a report about some pilot whales that had beached themselves on our local beach.

        2. After watching a cop movie I needed to check what time it was, I opened my iPhone to check the time… it was 9:11.

        Mere coincidence or something else?

I love anecdotes such as these. I don’t know if we will ever know for sure what is behind these incidents but I find them to be extremely interesting. I am no expert but I certainly believe there is a force greater than us who plays a role in many of these things. At the very least, it is extremely interesting to contemplate.
