This was one of those weeks when I was reminded that no matter what is planned, there are times when you are just not going to get done what you intend. The week seemed to move very rapidly while I hopped from one task to another. Much got accomplished, fires were put out and all crises were averted. I am left exhausted and discombobulated.

Who even uses the word discombobulated? That is a word that sounds exactly like the way I felt and how my week went–addled, befuddled, rattled, in a tizzy, shook up, off-balance, at sixes and sevens, baffled, flummoxed, jumbled, muddled, and all such other ridiculous crazy synonyms. There were no really bad things that happened. We just kept running around dealing with issue after issue. Time flew by. Almost everything got dealt with but wow! I really need the reprieve that the weekend provides.

At work I had intended to spend much time preparing for a couple of important meetings that are coming up next week. I maybe managed an hour on those tasks. I have been at this job long enough that I know I will manage to do all right, but I won’t feel as prepared as I like to be.

At home, I had to finish up a project as a gift for my sister/roommate’s birthday which was today. I managed to get it done early this evening but I sure prefer to give myself more time to make sure I am doing a good job. At a different issue, I spent (wasted) a great deal of time looking for photos that where rather urgently requested. I, who am generally a well-organized person, have never done a good job in keeping snapshots in any kind of order. I have several shoe boxes with photos in no particular order. I am full of admiration for those people who have every picture labeled and dated and cataloged. I have never been that person so I end up wasting much time looking for exactly what was needed. For probably the 80th time in my life I vowed to get those pictures organized–and once again I will probably forget that vow until the next time that I am scrambling to come up with a picture.

I did not spend any time with my blog since last Friday night when I posted the previous Casual Friday post. I did not read any other blogs and made no comments. I did not respond to  any comments received from others. I did not manage to post even one of my regular posts. It makes me wonder what I possibly was thinking when I gave blogging a try. I do really enjoy it but there are times when it just not seem like a productive way to spend my time. I still am troubled with finding the right balance.

The one thing that I was able to do consistently was my early morning mile walk with my yellow lab. With everything seeming to be disrupted it is great to have one thing that I can be depended on to do. If you could see the look of sadness that my dog has on her face if she doesn’t get that walk, you would understand that I could not live with myself if I let her down. The bad part is that now it is dark when I start out for my walk at 5:45 and it is barely getting light by the time I get home. It feels a little eerie and I am not totally comfortable with that walk in the dark. I may have to adjust our walk.

I am hoping for a calm, quiet weekend so that I can face my rat race come Monday morning. I hope for all of you that your weekend will be all you want it to be.

Another week is in the books.

My work week was busy with 20 hours of learning new computer software functionality which left 20 hours to concentrate on the rest of the job. I love learning new things and we have a very effective facilitator which made for a good learning experience. Continue reading

Another work week is in the books.

I had a pleasant, productive week at the office other than the first two days when the next door building construction was particularly noisy. By the end of the week they were still doing grading and dirt work but the equipment was so quiet that I barely heard it in my office.

I have been absent from the blogging world this week. Everything is fine but I just made a decision to concentrate on my cross stitch project during my free time this week. I have written about struggling to balance blogging with my other interests. This week as I near completing a long-term cross stitch project I decided to concentrate on it. I have almost finished the stitching. As a matter of fact, I think I have about another hour’s worth of stitching to do. Hopefully I will finish that in the morning so I can feature it in my Saturday Stitching Post tomorrow. But anyway, I decided to forego my blog this week so I could complete the project.

Casual Friday BootsI am sure that it is already Saturday for many of my blog followers but I still have a bit of time left of Friday so I think I will manage to get this published on my Friday.

I spent most of my work week in a training class so it was a departure from my normal routine. After the training finished on Thursday afternoon I was plenty busy with the work I couldn’t get done while in training. The weekend once again is upon me before I am ready for it.  But then Monday morning will also be here before I am ready for it.

A new building is being built immediately adjacent to my office building with construction starting on Monday. My office is on the side of the building locating right next to the construction site and my window looks out upon the site. Up until now I have had a view of a vacant lot with occasional sightings of small animals. Soon my view will be of construction. I expect I will be experiencing months of construction noise. Hopefully it will not be too bad.

I got a notice this week that my doctor is retiring. She has been my doctor for the four years that I have lived here and I really liked her. I am not someone who goes to the doctor very often but I have appreciated her approach and her bedside manner. I will stay with the same medical group but I am not looking forward to starting over with a new doctor. Maybe I like this doctor so much because she is close to my age. Has anyone else noticed that doctors are getting younger and younger these days? I recall the first time that I went to a doctor who was younger than I was. It was perhaps the first time I thought about my own aging.

The newspaper reported this week that a very small part of the state of New Mexico is still considered to be in the state of drought. Our wet weather has really improved conditions but the water table is still not back to normal. We had more rain one night this week and also some weather that was quite warm. It is summer in New Mexico and I have to expect the heat, but our summer has been much more comfortable than typical.

Rufous hummingbirds, the most territorial of all hummingbirds have made their appearance at our feeders. They aggressively chase away other hummingbirds that come near. I was relaxing on my deck talking on the phone earlier in the week and the hummingbirds were having a bit of warfare above my head. They got awful close to me as they chased one another away and ultimately I went back into the house to escape.

Lantana is blossoming in the garden with its clusters of tiny flowers in red, orange and yellow. It is a flower that does very well in this climate.

Wishing everyone will have a pleasant weekend.

Another weekend is upon us. It is actually a long weekend for me as I took off work today to take care of some personal business. I started out with my early morning walk and then got my car serviced. Then it was a trip to the retirement office to start some paperwork. I am seriously considering retiring my the end of the year so it is time to get some straight facts about my pension amount, cost of insurance and numerous other details. This was followed by a quick shopping trip to pick up essential items. That filled the morning so in the afternoon I pampered myself with a nap.

Last week I mentioned a new yellow blossom in the garden but I confessed that I did not know what it was. Turns out it yarrow. It commonly grows around here and I should have been able to identify it.  Ours had been planted in that spot 3 years ago but it had never blossomed. This year when it finally bloomed I did not recall that we had planted it and I did not recognize it.

Casual Friday – 7/3/15

imageThe month of July has come up from nowhere and blindsided me.  Today July 3 we have passed the midpoint of the year 2015. It is the 184th day of the year with 181 days remaining until the end of the year. I do not spend my time counting down many things, but it is just mind-boggling to think we are more than half way through another year. When I was a teacher, in my mind the 4th of July marked the midpoint of summer vacation. I never really counted the days but it psychologically seemed to be significant.  Memorial Day seems to officially start summer, Labor Day seems to end it and in the middle is Independence Day.Casual Friday Boots

I plan to have a calm three-day weekend. I slept in this morning. Quite remarkably I didn’t wake up until after 8 a.m. Typically even when I plan to sleep in I am up by 7:00. I actually went to bed early last night so it is surprising that I slept that late. After showering, getting dressed,  and reading the newspaper while eating breakfast, I finished a book that I had been reading.  The rest of my day will be spent doing a bit of cleaning, stitching on my ongoing project and blogging.  Minus the cleaning, these are some of my favorite things.

My Favorite Past-Times. A Tuesday List of Ten

List of 10I have many interests. There is a variety of things that I like to do when I have time for myself. Since I am an introvert most of my preferred activities are solo activities or things to be done with a small group of people. You won’t find things on my list that involve crowds and constant interaction with others.  I also have the kind of job where I have frequent interaction with people at a rather fast pace. This is another reason why I prefer quiet activities when I have free time.

After my husband passed away, my high-school aged daughter told me that I had to get a life. She felt sorry for me staying at home when I wasn’t working, although I was quite content. Now that she also has embraced being an introvert she also appreciates the time when she can be home alone.

I came home from work last Friday not feeling well, and iended up with a bad cold. Most of last weekend I spent in bed and still was wiped out on Monday so I had to take a rare sick day. After another day with a lot of sleep I felt better so I went back to work on Tuesday. I was still pretty drained on Tuesday and Wednesday although I managed to have productive days at work. I finally felt up to resuming my morning walks on Thursday morning. That makes for one happy yellow Labrador retriever, Chelsey, whose home and walks I share. Continue reading

Another Friday rolls around. Fortunately, my life has pretty much returned to normal, if there is such a thing as normal.

The highlight of my week was  getting back in the routine of taking an early morning walk with Chelsey, my yellow lab. Last year from June until September the dawn walk had been an important part of each day. I got up at 5:15, dressed immediately and put Chelsey on her leash. Casual Friday BootsWe made a 1 mile loop around the neighborhood. The only mornings we missed were when it rained. If I lay in bed a few minutes after my alarm went off, I would find Chelsey’s mug right up face and she would be staring at me. Unfortunately, the walks came to an abrupt end after I tore a meniscus on one of those walks. I was not recovered enough to continue the walks before the cold winter set in. I am healed now and have had a lazy winter and spring. With it now getting light early enough I am back at the walks. For me, it is a wonderful start to the day, and hopefully the pounds that I put on during my lack of activity will find a way to fall off. Chelsey is a year older and a year less limber so I am increasing the distance gradually, with hopes that the mile loop will not be too much for her.
