To me, there are three things we should all do everyday. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy.
But think about it. If you laugh, you think and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.
Jim Valvano (1946 – 1993) was the head basketball coach at North Carolina State University. His team won the 1983 NCAA basketball tournament. He followed up his coaching career with broadcasting career. He was diagnosed with cancer in June of 1992. The above quote was taken from a speech he game just months before his death when he was presented with the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award at the ESPN Espy awards. In the same speech, he announced the creation of The V Foundation for Cancer Research, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for cancer.
More information can be found here at the V Foundation website.
Many of our lives have been touched by cancer. I lost my husband and my brother to cancer, to mention just a few of the people I know who have been affected by the disease. With the ESPN Espy awards airing tonight, it is an appropriate time to share this memorable quote from Jim Valvano as well as his moving speech.
On Wednesdays I participate in Words Crush Wednesday Favorite Quote Challenge hosted by Rebirth of Lisa.
