Quotes by Women About Women – A Top Ten Tuesday List

Top Ten TuesdayInternational Women’s Day was on Sunday, March 8. The month of March is Women’s History Month. In honor of those two occasions, today’s Top Ten Tuesday is a list of quotes by women about women. I looked for quotes that are somewhat obscure and tried to stay away from those quotes that are commonplace. However, since we all come from different places it is completely possible that just because I had not previously heard them does not mean that they are obscure.

Think about these quotes.  What are the messages they communicate about women and about men and about society?  You may agree or disagree with any of them, but it is worthwhile to think about what they suggest.

  1. Somewhere out in this audience may even be someone who will one day follow in my footsteps, and preside over the White House as the President’s spouse.  I wish him well. –Barbara Bush
  2. We ask justice, we ask equality, we ask that all the civil and political rights that belong to citizens of the United States, be guaranteed to us and our daughters forever. –Susan B. Anthony.
  3. The test for whether or not you can hold a job should not be the arrangement of your chromosomes.–Bella Abzug
  4. One of the things about equality is not just that you be treated equally to a man, but that you treat yourself equally to the way you treat a man.–Marlo Thomas
  5. Whether women are better than men I cannot say – but I can say they are certainly no worse.–Golda Meir
  6. For most of history, Anonymous was a woman.–Virginia Woolf
  7. I want to do it because I want to do it.  Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be a challenge to others. –Amelia Earhart
  8. There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.–Madeline Albright
  9. Remember Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels. –Faith Whittlesey
  10. Taking joy in living is a woman’s best cosmetic.–Rosalind Russell

Do any of these quotes resonate with you?  What is the most important message for women all people to hear and to embrace?

Were you able to find the song? I went to your website but did not see it. I think I remember the song from when my daughter was little, and I think we had a book that went with the song.

I love the point that it is not the cosmetics that makes a woman beautiful. It is what they project from inside themselves.

I have always thought of Barbara Bush as a perfectly charming woman but never thought of her as being particularly forward thinking. That is part of why I really like that quote–it came from someone who I would not have expected to say that.

Oooh, I didn’t now March was Woman’s History Month; what country are you from? I don’t think we have such a celebration in Australia, but we certainly should. I like your piece on Quotes by Women About Women; nice, given we’ve just had International Woman’s Day. I like to keep up with what’s for women internationally through UN Women: https://unwomen.org.au/. By the way, I too am approaching retirement still don’t know what I want to do when I grow up!

i am in the U.S. You sound just like me. Didn’t you believe that at some point in your life you would actually have the answers? I’m still waiting for that.

International Women’s Day always depresses me. How can it be that in 2015, we still need it?

Your list of quotes is excellent, though. My favourite has to be #9 – says it all, doesn’t it…

I’d like to believe that we no longer need it. And some things have improved for women, but they still don’t earn as much money and have to put up with all kinds of sexual harassment. That’s in the U.S. and when you think of other countries, it is so much worse. I do love the quote about Ginger Rogers.
