What I Learned This Week

Top Ten TuesdayI typically post some regular features on my blog including a Casual Friday post, a Saturday stitching post and a Top Ten Tuesday list.  However, things have not gone exactly according to plan and I could not do the first two this week.  This is a feeble attempt to publish a Top Ten Tuesday list. I flew to Wisconsin on Thursday and met up with family to join my brother and his wife in celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary,  That was great.  We had a terrific time and I saw tons of people that I had not seen for decades.  Unfortunately, although I was supposed to fly back on Sunday morning, I am still in Wisconsin with a flight now scheduled to depart at noon today.Hopefully, this flight will not be cancelled like several others have been.

With some effort at posting one of my features, today’s topic is 10 things I have learned this week.

  1. The gratefulness I have for my family is reaffirmed.  Although we have had our differences over the years we are always supportive of each other and we do love one another.
  2. 50 years of marriage is a monumental accomplishment and should be celebrated.
  3. When flights are cancelled, it is terrific to have family or friends close by to rescue you from hotel dwelling.
  4. People get really ugly when their flights are cancelled.
  5. I would not want to be an airport ticket agent for anything in this whole world.
  6. When you choose to fly in the winter you should realize that there might be some problems with flights.
  7. When calling the airline to re-book a cancelled flight and the opening recording is, “Due to severe weather in parts of the country, the sales agents are receiving a high number of calls and the wait time is longer than normal…” it is best to make your way to the airport and try to re-book at the counter.
  8. If you try to stay on the line for the next available agent (see #7), leave your cell phone plugged in to the charger if at all possible.  My call got disconnected after hours on hold when my cell phone’s battery was depleted.
  9. Try to make the best of a bad situation.  Take the time to read.  Or blog.  Or pray.  Or anything else, but try to not just feel sorry for yourself
  10. One way or the other things will work out.

I am in the Milwaukee airport but I am checked in for my flight and it looks like I will be on my way.

I can’t even imagine all of the stressed out people in that airport. I hope you are on your way home!

Reblogged this on Michel Hobson's Workplace Training Blog and commented:
“Road Warriors” who travel frequently on business, (8+ years for me) have stories to tell about managing the ups and downs of cancelled flights, overworked ticket agents, and stuffed overhead bins. Ask us! We can tell the best airports to be stranded in – by country. We can recommend the best gates to take a lengthy work break because there are plenty of charge outlets and comfortable seating (with side tables for files and food). Need to track your connecting flight online? No problem – we have several websites to share. Need to know how to quickly get from one side of airport to the other? No problem, just follow me.

But sometimes – it’s just best to make the most of the situation and go with it.

I could have used some of this expertise while struggling to figure out what to do. As a casual traveler although I knew things would get worked out and that eventually I would get home, it was rather daunting.

Not a lot of fun things to have learned this week. Hopefully next week will be a better week.

Believe it or not, it could have been a lot worse. I had decided to take the attitude from the start that it would get worked out one way or another so I just didn’t let it get to me. But I will admit that I was exceptionally happy to get home.
